“IF SYDNEY HAD NOT RETURNED TO LONDON I MIGHT HAVE BECOME A THIEF…I MIGHT HAVE BEEN BURIED IN A PAUPER’S GRAVE”

Jeffrey Vance Collection
Charlie’s big brother Syd was his rock of Gibraltor. After their mother was hospitalized for a mental illness when Charlie was fourteen, Sydney became his legal guardian, having already served as his protector, mentor and substitute father figure. Several years later, already a music hall star in his own right, Sydney was instrumental in helping Charlie get his first big break in show business.
A few years after that, when Chaplin became the most famous movie star in the world, Syd put his own career on the back burner and became Charlie’s financial manager and trusted personal advisor. They remained loving and supportive of one another throughout their lives. |
