Vesta Tilley, a male impersonator in her famous stage role as Burlington Bertie, which is not to be confused with Burlington Bertie From Bow (see next essay). Tilley’s Bertie is a female comedian’s tongue-in-cheek satire of a foppish male swell. His first name resonates with the Prince of Wales and his stage costume conjures images of various male lion comiques including Charlie Chaplin Sr. For a typical example of a lion comique peacock doing the “lad-di-dah”
